Career Talk for Accounting Students | Seeking the Simplest Truth: Essence and Uniqueness

On November 8, 2023, the Department of Accounting (DAcc) invited Ms. Cathy to deliver a career talk titled "Seeking the Simplest Truth: Essence and Uniqueness".

To open the career talk, Dr. Anthony LIU, head of DAcc, introduced Ms. Cathy LUO, the guest speaker. Ms. LUO is the manager of the Geguzhai Art Fund and an ACCA member. Previously served as Financial Accountant, Senior Director of Fund Management, Director of Funds Department in Greater China, and Head of Corporate and Interbank Departments at Bank of Communications Zhuhai Branch, Amway (China) Daily Necessities Co., Ltd., French Yangshi Group (China) Resource Management Center, and China Merchants Bank Zhongshan Branch. At present, she is the fund manager of Geguzhai Art Investment Fund, presiding over fund structure construction, art investment decision-making, fund roadshow, original writing of official account, etc.

Dr. Anthony LIU introduced to the guest speaker and students the current accreditation relationship and good cooperation between UIC’s Accounting Programme and domestic and overseas accounting professional bodies. Particularly, UIC’s Accounting Programme has obtained accreditation from the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), accreditation from the Taxation Institute of HKSAR (TIHK), which has brought to UIC’s accounting students many major preferential policies in accounting and taxation qualification examinations. Examples are HKICPA ten-subject exemptions, mutual exemption policies between HKICPA and CICPA, examination-exempted membership transferring policy between HKICPA-ACCA, 3 exemptions out of 5 papers for TIHK's certification examinations, and so on. These preferential policies for professional qualification examinations fully reflect the high recognition that UIC’s Accounting Programme enjoys in accounting and taxation professions.

Ms. Carmen, ACCA-Guangzhou-Office Senior Business Development Officer, briefly introduced ACCA and its global influence to the students, and summarized the four major development directions of future financial and accounting talents, including transformation promoter, business analyst, assurance provider and comprehensive reporter, providing students with forward-looking career development directions.

In her talk on Seeking the Simplest Truth: Essence and Uniqueness, Ms. LUO Qingrui shared her own study and employment experience. Then she told the audience that, as a member of ACCA, she fully enjoyed the good communication atmosphere provided by the accounting professional organization. For example, if members encountered professional problems, they could get timely answers from experts in related fields in the members’ chat group; members could benefit from various professional teaching courses. Ms. Luo particularly emphasized the process of self-awareness, finding her suitable direction, formulating practical plans, and resolutely executing them, so that she will gain something in her career development.

During the talk, Ms. LUO also interspersed many interactive questions about cultural relics, which not only enlivened the atmosphere, but also allowed everyone to learn a lot of interesting knowledge about cultural relics. Ms. LUO also brought two of her treasured collections: a plum vase and an export pot. She carefully explained to the students, including the year of production, shape, use, glaze color, etc. The students gathered around Ms. Luo and listened with gusto. Later, they were able to feel the two antique articles with their own hands. The whole career talk has been a very attractive and special experience for all attendants.

After the talk, the students, still with great enthusiasm, asked Ms. Luo many questions about academic planning, professional qualification examinations, career development, studying abroad, etc. Ms. LUO answered them one by one meticulously. The Q&A session lasted for more than an hour, and all activities ended in everyone’s reluctance to leave.
