Abstract

The emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), such asChatGPT, represents a disruptive force in higher education, creating tensionsthat affect educators' occupational wellness and professional development whilegenerating technostress. This study investigates the impact of GenAI onteachers by examining (1) the extent to which GenAI brings technostress tohigher education educators and (2) how GenAI changes teachers' professionalidentities and the technostress that results from such changes. We hypothesizethat techno-eustress and techno-distress stem from two distinct forms ofidentity incongruence: actual-ought and actual-ideal discrepancy. Employing aconvergent mixed-methods design, we gathered data through 136 questionnairesurveys and 24 semi-structured interviews from university faculty members inChina, Singapore, and Malaysia. This research extends technostress scholarshipfrom corporate environments into higher education institutions. The resultsoffer actionable insights for educational administrators in developingpolicies, establishing guidelines, and creating faculty development initiativesthat address technostress arising from GenAI integration.
