Economics is known as the “intellectual crown” of the modern market economy. It governs the dynamics driving many crucial decisions in modern life, from personal time management, household consumption and investment, to urban planning, labor allocation, fiscal management, macroeconomic stabilization and global finance. Built on mathematical logics and statistical analyses, economics employs an extensive toolkit of quantitative methods, including mathematical modeling, computation, statistical analyses, data-mining and machine learning, to understand issues and policies key to social decision makers. The study of economics is literally everywhere and the skills one learns from economics can be applied in every arena in life. This is why economics graduates are highly sought after by employers of a wide range of sectors and are popularly accepted by postgraduate programs in many fields.

Features of the Programme

The UIC AE programme nurtures analytical thinkers and rigorous problem-solvers. The AE curriculum helps students dissect managerial issues and problems with economic analyses and insights. With our world-class faculty and teaching materials, our students acquire valuable skills in data analytics, public policy design and evaluation, and corporate strategy formulation.

The continuing transformation of the Chinese marketplace and the process of skill upgrading in the country is creating an unsatiated demand for talent with formal economic training. The graduates from the AE programme will have multiple career development tracks. They can be employed as economists and researchers inside governments, NGOs, financial institutions, businesses, universities, and research organizations. Alternatively, they can be employed as business specialists and managers in various functional areas of a commercial enterprise, such as in finance, marketing, data analytics, management, research and development.  

The Applied Economics Programme was one of the first major programmes established by UIC when the college was founded in 2005. Over the years, the AE programme has solidified a great reputation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Great Bay region and elsewhere in China because of the career successes of a large group of AE alumni. In the meantime, the AE programme also takes great pride in its impressive record of placing AE graduates in top-ranked Master and PhD Level programs all around the globe.
