UIC welcomes new postgraduate students

    More than 600 new postgraduate students (including taught and research programmes) have arrived at UIC, ready to start their studies.

    They have followed the instructions and registered in batches to minimise the risk of the spread of COVID-19.

    On 5 September, UIC held an orientation for the taught postgraduate students. In his speech, UIC President Prof Tang Tao said that in liberal arts education, academic research is an indispensable part. He mentioned that this year, the number of postgraduate students has increased. As the second-phase campus lays a foundation for disciplinary development, UIC will keep introducing high-level talents, develop postgraduate education, strengthen research cooperation, and create talents for the Greater Bay Area.

    The Programme of Master of Arts in Communication is jointly offered by the School of Communication and Film of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and the four divisions of UIC. There are four concentrations: Media Management Concentration, Film, TV and New Media Concentration, Communication Studies Concentration, and Artificial Intelligence and Digital Media Concentration. Based on the respective advantages of the two institutions, the curriculum setting stands on integrating knowledge and skills in the area of communication, which aims at training media talents.

    The Associate Vice-President (Mainland) and the Dean of the School of Communication and Film of HKBU, Prof Huang Yu, gave a recorded speech to welcome the new students warmly. He wished that the student can acquire knowledge and contribute to the industry.

    UIC Vice President (Research and Development) and the Dean of Graduate School, Prof Jia Weijia, introduced UIC from different perspectives, including history, education model, faculty, postgraduate programmes, and facilities. He hopes that students can achieve accomplishments in academic studies and apply the knowledge in the relevant fields.

    Assistant to President and Administration Director of Graduate School, Ms Ashura Lam, said that education is an opportunity to change one’s life. She mentioned that teachers and students have a close relationship in UIC. She encouraged students to utilise UIC resources while studying here.

    Among the new postgraduate students, 60% of them just graduated from their bachelor studies. The rest are practitioners from the industry.

    Guo Junru just graduated from the Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications. She has enrolled in the Master of Arts in Communication-Film TV and New Media Concentration. UIC’s well-designed courses, strong teaching faculty, and the beautiful campus are what attracted Junru. Besides learning professional knowledge during her time at UIC, she also hopes to build her problem-solving skills.

    Zhao Xiaoyi, who works in the Zhuhai Media Group Co., Ltd, chose to return to the campus after gaining experience in the media industry. As a result, she was admitted to the Communication Studies Concentration. Zhao Xiaoyi said that coming to UIC was a decision she made after receiving a recommendation from her fellow media practitioner.

    After the orientation, meetings with teachers were held by different programme concentrations.
