It has been seven years since I graduated from UIC. Looking back on my college life, I feel that the four years I spent in the Division of Business Management at UIC were extremely fulfilling. In addition to the professional knowledge, what impressed me a lot during my time at UIC was that I learned to be mature and independent, explore what I want in my life, obtain the courage to change, and accept all possibilities. All of these have become valuable wisdom in my future growth. And this wisdom further enriched my master's studies and my work, accompanying me all the way through my doctoral studies. Now, I am about to graduate with my Ph.D. and devote myself to academic research. I hope that what I have gained at UIC will continue to shine in my academic career and in my life afterward.

Dr. Xiao spent the most important years of his life at the University of Edinburgh. Not only has he successfully completed his Ph.D. in Economics there, but he also made a lot of friends and embarked on his favorite research projects. Because of his outstanding academic performance in postgraduate study, he got the opportunity to pursue his Ph.D. study with a full scholarship. He was also recognized as an excellent tutor at the University of Edinburgh. Mr. Xiao's advice to UIC students is that choose the most suitable goal for you, no matter it is to pursue further study or employment.

As a social science, economics is a discipline that explores the causal relationship in our daily lives, and it also teaches us how to make rational business decisions. I believe that undergraduate study is more important to equip us with the necessary skills for postgraduate study. The courses provided in the applied economics programme are very broad, which means that the choices for your postgraduate study will be more flexible. It is also relatively easy for graduates of the AE programme to transfer to other majors in the business school when applying for postgraduate study. So I chose to study in the AE program because I would have more choices in the future.

The curriculum of the Applied Economics program can well cover the content of economics at the undergraduate level, namely microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. I also took courses related to calculus, linear algebra, and time series analysis in UIC in order to consolidate my quantitative research method. I think my four years of study at UIC have well prepared me for my postgraduate study, and as a result, I could quickly adapt to the requirements of various postgraduate courses and academic thesis writing. The instructors of the Applied Economics program are very approachable, and the in-depth communication with our faculty members during my studies also greatly inspired me for future career planning. I am very lucky to meet so many good professors in the applied economics program and it was such a pleasure to be instructed by them. They and those assistant instructors are those people who make this program so special to me.

The theoretical knowledge learned in UIC has helped me to transform it into practical ability to conduct empirical research for my postgraduate study. The four-year English teaching and learning environment also made me quickly adapt to the foreign educational system. In the future, I will continue to do research in the field of economics and business. I hope that after graduation from UCL, I can have a chance to return to my alma mater and contribute to the teaching and research of the AE program.

The four years of study in AE enabled me to analyze problems from the perspective of an economist. Economics is not only closely related to our daily life but also related to the macroeconomy and government policies. The AE faculty taught me many real cases, their professional experiences, and scholarly knowledge that helped me to study and analyze in a logical and systematic way. Apart from the rigorous academic atmosphere, the warm family atmosphere is also an important factor that UIC has offered me. I took advantage provided by the university to teach the year 1 and 2 students in weekly tutorials. Time flies—it has already been six years since I graduated from BNBU and stepped into the professional world. I often find myself reminiscing about my time at BNBU: the kind and supportive professors, the engaging and easy-to-follow classes, the vibrant cultural activities, the beautiful campus, and the inclusive and open academic atmosphere… all of these memories fill me with nostalgia.

The four years at BNBU will be an unforgettable fouryear period in my life. It has witnessed me grow up from a naive high school student to a newage young man who can take charge of his own life. I was especially impressed by Prof. Wu Minglu, who taught me a lot about statistics and quantitative knowledge, which played a very important role in my future study of economics. In my study life, the clubs and the student union have helped me to grow and make progress. In classes, I was fortunate to meet dedicated and inspiring professors. At MCP, I formed lifelong friendships that lasted through four years of companionship. During the annual Club Fair, I joined a student organization that I still cherish deeply to this day. My four years at BNBU will undoubtedly be some of the most unforgettable times of my life. This campus witnessed my dreams, doubts, and passions, and ultimately shaped the person I am today.

Looking back on this journey of growth, I am most grateful for the unwavering support of my professors in my academic pursuits. Their passion for teaching and rigorous approach to scholarship inspired me to delve deeper into the field of economics. With every new theoretical model I learned and every market principle I understood, my determination to continue down this path grew stronger.

When the application season arrived, I took the initiative to research economics programs at my target schools. I poured the knowledge I had accumulated during my undergraduate years into my personal statement, revising it over and over again to ensure it conveyed my genuine enthusiasm to the admissions officers. Those late nights spent carefully refining every word felt like a return to the study rooms where I used to race against deadlines. My four years at BNBU have been a journey filled with challenges and growth. Gradually discovering my strong interest in data analytics during my study, I continuously pushed myself out of my comfort zone to explore broader possibilities. Fortunately, BNBU provided an open and flexible platform that allowed me to grow at my own pace and ultimately pursue my desired path.

I have always been curious about data and technology, and I hope to delve deeper into this field in the future. During my undergraduate studies, I selected cross-disciplinary courses to learn programming, statistics, and data analytics. I also actively participated in seminars and workshops to continuously build my interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. BNBU's diverse curriculum and flexible learning mechanisms enabled me to expand my data analytics abilities on top of my economics foundation, preparing me for a master's program in a data-related field. These efforts eventually led to my acceptance into MSc in Risk Management Science and Data Analytics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a job offer as a Data Warehouse Developer at TCL, opening up more possibilities for my future career development.

However, BNBU has given me more than just academic growth. Here, I gained a wealth of extracurricular experiences that allowed me to discover my passions beyond academics. I joined a student organization and participated in a marine conservation project, working with like-minded friends to promote environmental awareness and inspire more people to care about marine ecosystems. As a table tennis enthusiast, I represented the University in the Guangdong Province University Table Tennis Competition and won second place. This achievement was not only a recognition of my years of dedication to training but also a way for me to relieve stress and challenge myself outside of my demanding academic life.

BNBU has not only equipped me with professional knowledge but also encouraged me to try new things and constantly push my limits. What impressed me most was the supportive and passionate faculty. Our professors were always approachable and eager to help—whether academically or in guiding us toward our future goals. Economics is a foundational discipline that provided me with solid quantitative and modeling training, which later became instrumental for my interdisciplinary research endeavors. Applied economics, in particular, bridges abstract theory and real-world scenarios, bringing models to life through their relevance to everyday issues.

During my undergraduate studies, I was deeply influenced by Dr. Minglu Wu's econometrics course. The class was rigorous and demanding, sparking my strong interest in data analysis and modeling. This experience eventually led me to join McKinsey, where I worked as a healthcare data analytics consultant. Through in-depth exposure to the U.S. healthcare system, I gradually came to realize that only through systematic research training could I further sharpen my analytical thinking and research methods—paving the way for meaningful contributions in the healthcare domain. This conviction prompted my decision to pursue a PhD, transitioning from industry back into academia.

Looking back, I believe that the university’s liberal arts education philosophy played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. This emphasis on holistic development and independent thinking helped me break free from a purely exam-driven mindset, broaden my horizons, and explore my true self. During my four years of undergraduate studies, I gained a wealth of experience. On one hand, in terms of professional knowledge, the College offered students a wide range of elective courses of AE, from labour economics to industrial organization, from development economics to game theory, which greatly enriched our learning options and allowed students interested in economics to freely explore their favourite areas. On the other hand, in extracurricular activities, we were given space to organize various events, from innovative to large-scale activities, which not only enriched my university life but also trained my organizational skills and helped me make friends. Last year, I thought graduation was still far from me when I saw my senior classmates taking graduation pictures. Now it is actually my turn to say goodbye to UIC. When speaking of graduation season, most people think of a farewell. For me, it means the time for me to reap what I sow. Recently, I have been harvesting from what I have learned from the College and my efforts finally paid off. My supervisor recognized my Final Year Project and guided me to submit it to a journal. A postgraduate offer from my dream school demonstrated my ability and achievement. I also got an offer of as an internship from my target company. During my internship, I got praise for my high work efficiency and my unique understanding of professional knowledge which I acquired from the lessons and project I had taken in UIC. I have accumulated certain problem-solving skills that indeed come in handy in real practice during my study. My family are proud of me and proud of what I achieved. I also met a group of soul sisters and forever friends, the sincere friendship began in the first year of college and ended at the end of time.

Four years have passed quickly. In the days in UIC, I not only learned professional knowledge and gained great friendships, but also acquired the ability of teamwork and the spirit of never giving up. I have learnt to become a self-disciplined and self-strengthening person in UIC. In four years, I have been to the all-night study rooms many times, as well as the discussion rooms that need to be booked one or two weeks in advance. There are so many excellent peers of mine and all of them work extremely hard. Looking back on the four years of studying and living in UIC, I experienced lots of “first times” in my life. It was my first time to leave home by choosing to come to UIC when I was 18 years old. Coming to UIC, it was the first time for me to learn to adapt to a new environment and arrange my life by myself. It was the first time for me to experience the unique English teaching environment and Whole Person Education. It was the first time for me to learn to be a good listener in group work. It was the first time for me to become a tutor for junior students. It was the first time for me to communicate with professors individually. It was the first time for me to apply to my favorite school and think about my future. All of these first-time experiences in UIC allowed me to get ready for future . UIC taught me a lot. No matter where you come from, what your major is, you can talk with the professors and the students of different majors and listen to a diverse range of views. The internationalized teaching style allowed us to go abroad for further study. Although I was slightly confused about my future because of COVID-19 outbreak, I am still very grateful for my choice- to go to UIC, which enable me to have a wide arragy of choices in the future.

In the four years’ study in UIC, I felt equality and respect, especially in the communication between teachers and students. I felt very nervous when I bring my questions to my teachers as a freshman. Especially the fact that all communications are done in Englishincreased my stress level. Starting from the first knock on teacher’s office door, till making dinner appointments on WeChat or hanging out together with the teachers became the norm of my study life in UIC. I am grateful to many UIC teachers who accompanied me through my whole university life. Especially when applying for master study, teachers gave me full supports and encouraged me to apply for G5 universities. I feel grateful to UIC. At UIC, students in the Division of Business Management are required to study the course of “Principles of Law”, which laid a foundation for Ms. Liu’s future study. Since then, Ms. Liu took more courses related to law and took internship in court during vacations. She also studied the course of “Criminal Law” taught by Professor Lam (HongKong former barrister).

In her junior year, she got an exchange study opportunity at Lille Catholic University in France. Ms. Liu studied in IESEG School of Management and the Law School at the same time. The exchanging study experiences provided her an opportunity to study at the School of International Law at Peking University and made up her mind to pursue further study there.

After four years’ study of English at UIC, Ms. Liu felt the full confidence of taking the English test in the postgraduate entrance examination and spent three months mainly on specialized courses and comprehensive courses.

Ms. Liu says: "The English test is a major constraint for many candidates. Many of them start by memorizing words and spend a lot of time on the English test. Thanks to the English education in UIC, UICer's excellent English ability is a big advantage."

It has been more than half a year since I graduated from UIC and entered the workplace. The most treasured reward of my four-year study in UIC is that I have improved my oral English and presentation skills, my ability to communicate and cooperate with teams to complete group projects, my ability to independently explore and autonomously learn. After four years, it gave me a tremendous head start to my career. I quickly adapted to different environments, worked well under pressure, and executed complicated tasks. I like to find a seat with a computer on the second floor of the library, make a cup of tea, open a book and sit there for the whole morning. I like to go to classes early for the seat in the front row, so that I can get closer to the teachers and closer to the blackboard. I like to go to Room F204 right after classes and find a seat to print the course materials for the next day. I like the view from the small balcony on the sixth floor of 8A, quietly watching the crowds passing by the town square. I like the meals in “Café De Coral”, pork chop with rice and the icecold lemon tea.

My four years at BNBU have been a journey filled with challenges and growth. Gradually discovering my strong interest in data analytics during my study, I continuously pushed myself out of my comfort zone to explore broader possibilities. I have always been curious about data and technology, and I hope to delve deeper into this field in the future. Last year, I thought graduation was still far from me when I saw my senior classmates taking graduation pictures. Now it is actually my turn to say goodbye to UIC. Recently, I have been harvesting from what I have learned from the College and my efforts finally paid off. My supervisor recognized my Final Year Project and guided me to submit it to a journal. As a social science, economics is a discipline that explores the causal relationship in our daily lives, and it also teaches us how to make rational business decisions. I believe that undergraduate study is more important to equip us with the necessary skills for postgraduate study. The courses provided in the applied economics programme are very broad, which means that the choices for your postgraduate study will be more flexible. It is also relatively easy for graduates of the AE programme to transfer to other majors in the business school when applying for postgraduate study. So I chose to study in the AE program because I would have more choices in the future.

The curriculum of the Applied Economics program can well cover the content of economics at the undergraduate level, namely microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. I also took courses related to calculus, linear algebra, and time series analysis in UIC in order to consolidate my quantitative research method. I think my four years of study at UIC have well prepared me for my postgraduate study, and as a result, I could quickly adapt to the requirements of various postgraduate courses and academic thesis writing. The instructors of the Applied Economics program are very approachable, and the in-depth communication with our faculty members during my studies also greatly inspired me for future career planning. I am very lucky to meet so many good professors in the applied economics program and it was such a pleasure to be instructed by them. They and those assistant instructors are those people who make this program so special to me.

The theoretical knowledge learned in UIC has helped me to transform it into practical ability to conduct empirical research for my postgraduate study. The four-year English teaching and learning environment also made me quickly adapt to the foreign educational system. In the future, I will continue to do research in the field of economics and business. I hope that after graduation from UCL, I can have a chance to return to my alma mater and contribute to the teaching and research of the AE program.

Looking back on the four years of studying and living in UIC, I experienced lots of “first times” in my life. It was my first time to leave home by choosing to come to UIC when I was 18 years old. Coming to UIC, it was the first time for me to learn to adapt to a new environment and arrange my life by myself. It was the first time for me to experience the unique English teaching environment and Whole Person Education. It was the first time for me to learn to be a good listener in group work. It was the first time for me to become a tutor for junior students. It was the first time for me to communicate with professors individually. It was the first time for me to apply to my favorite school and think about my future. All of these first-time experiences in UIC allowed me to get ready for future . UIC taught me a lot. Secondly, the curriculum in UIC accustomed me to the busy and self-disciplined study life and the medium of instruction in English perfected my English skills, which made my transition to the master’s study overseas much easier. To study at UIC is  the best choice in my life! Though 2020 is a difficult time for international students, most of my friends in UIC succeed in getting their ideal offers when they graduate. What I learned from UIC is that when you try to do things well, you will put forward a lot of hard work but you can enjoy the taste of joy from your success. I feel no regret. It is well worth it.

After four years of study in UIC, I was enrolled in the master's degree program of Applied Economics at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. After the completion of the master's degree, I am pursuing a doctoral degree in Blockchain Economics at the Interdisciplinary Graduate School at NTU. I was grateful for the great advantages of international education that UIC had brought me and the unique way of thinking that UIC had imparted in me. I noted that UIC students know what they want to do at present and in the future better than students from other universities, and they will not give up their dreams for immediate interests and will not take a step off their paths because of the tumultuous environment. In the four years’ study in UIC, I felt equality and respect, especially in the communication between teachers and students. I felt very nervous when I bring my questions to my teachers as a freshman. Especially the fact that all communications are done in Englishincreased my stress level. Starting from the first knock on teacher’s office door, till making dinner appointments on WeChat or hanging out together with the teachers became the norm of my study life in UIC. I am grateful to many UIC teachers who accompanied me through my whole university life. Hello everyone, I am Liang Zhenyuan, currently working at the Third Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security, focusing on data security.

Time flies—it has already been six years since I graduated from BNBU and stepped into the professional world. I often find myself reminiscing about my time at BNBU: the kind and supportive professors, the engaging and easy-to-follow classes, the vibrant cultural activities, the beautiful campus, and the inclusive and open academic atmosphere… all of these memories fill me with nostalgia.

Economics is a foundational discipline that provided me with solid quantitative and modeling training, which later became instrumental for my interdisciplinary research endeavors. Applied economics, in particular, bridges abstract theory and real-world scenarios, bringing models to life through their relevance to everyday issues.

During my undergraduate studies, I was deeply influenced by Dr. Minglu Wu's econometrics course. The class was rigorous and demanding, sparking my strong interest in data analysis and modeling. This experience eventually led me to join McKinsey, where I worked as a healthcare data analytics consultant. Through in-depth exposure to the U.S. healthcare system, I gradually came to realize that only through systematic research training could I further sharpen my analytical thinking and research methods—paving the way for meaningful contributions in the healthcare domain. This conviction prompted my decision to pursue a PhD, transitioning from industry back into academia.

Looking back, I believe that the university’s liberal arts education philosophy played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. This emphasis on holistic development and independent thinking helped me break free from a purely exam-driven mindset, broaden my horizons, and explore my true self. The fully English-taught environment and global academic resources also encouraged us to ask bold, reflective questions in an international context: “Who am I? What kind of person do I want to become?” To me, this is the very essence of education—to empower each individual to keep exploring your potential, and don’t be afraid to become the best version of yourself.

In the past four years, the free and tolerant atmosphere in UIC made me feel the joy of studying and provided me many opportunities to explore my interests in different subjects. Additionally, UIC provides me with a first-rate study environment with modern high-techequipments, a clean and tidy campus, English-speaking atmosphere, and the various types of interest clubs, competitions, speeches and performances. UIC’s uphold of liberal arts education cultivates open-minded, well-rounded talents, enabling students to have all-round developments. The study life in UIC is pleasant and occupying. I set up my goals and future plans. As the teaching mode of UIC enables me to get used to the learning environment in the United States quickly, I am able to spent more time to get familiar with the new environment and make many interesting friends.

At UIC, students in the Division of Business Management are required to study the course of “Principles of Law”, which laid a foundation for Ms. Liu’s future study. Since then, Ms. Liu took more courses related to law and took internship in court during vacations. She also studied the course of “Criminal Law” taught by Professor Lam (HongKong former barrister).

In her junior year, she got an exchange study opportunity at Lille Catholic University in France. Ms. Liu studied in IESEG School of Management and the Law School at the same time. The exchanging study experiences provided her an opportunity to study at the School of International Law at Peking University and made up her mind to pursue further study there.

After four years’ study of English at UIC, Ms. Liu felt the full confidence of taking the English test in the postgraduate entrance examination and spent three months mainly on specialized courses and comprehensive courses.

Ms. Liu says: "The English test is a major constraint for many candidates. Many of them start by memorizing words and spend a lot of time on the English test. Thanks to the English education in UIC, UICer's excellent English ability is a big advantage."

It has been more than half a year since I graduated from UIC and entered the workplace. The most treasured reward of my four-year study in UIC is that I have improved my oral English and presentation skills, my ability to communicate and cooperate with teams to complete group projects, my ability to independently explore and autonomously learn. After four years, it gave me a tremendous head start to my career. I quickly adapted to different environments, worked well under pressure, and executed complicated tasks. Compared with other fresh graduates, UIC graduates have stronger competitiveness. I love UIC deeply.

I like to find a seat with a computer on the second floor of the library, make a cup of tea, open a book and sit there for the whole morning. I like to go to classes early for the seat in the front row, so that I can get closer to the teachers and closer to the blackboard. I like to go to Room F204 right after classes and find a seat to print the course materials for the next day. I like the view from the small balcony on the sixth floor of 8A, quietly watching the crowds passing by the town square. I like the meals in “Café De Coral”, pork chop with rice and the icecold lemon tea.

I always dream of returning to UIC one day to become a teacher.

After graduation from UIC, I went to Queen Mary University of London for further study, majoring in investment and finance. The four-year study in UIC imparted in me professional knowledge, such as macroeconomics and microeconomics, accounting and financial knowledge. If I had to recount the reason for choosing UIC four years ago, maybe I don’t have a straight answer for it. But four years later, the reasons have become so varied but obvious. The AE curriculum enabled me to fully understand the professional knowledge of economics. Additionally, I also learned how to balance myself under pressure from the intensity of study.
