On the afternoon of October 25th, Dr. Minyu Wu, Acting Head of DFE, Dr. Tao Huang, Associate Professor of Finance, Dr. Tiger Xiao, Associate Professor of Finance, and Dr. Bei Luo, Assistant Professor of Applied Economics, and DFE students participated the symposium of " FYP as an effective tool for further studies and employment”.
Firstly, the four professors shared their understanding of the FYP. FYP is the project that every student must complete before graduation. Combining practice and theory, FYP allows students to practice theoretical knowledge for problem-solving in the real world.
Afterwards, the symposium was held in mutual communication and Q&A. Students from finance asked whether they should insist on a hard but interesting research topic. If yes, what they should do for the advanced preparation, from both literature and analysis skills perspective.
On this question, Dr. Wu answered that research is a process of continuous trials and innovation. It takes time to discover what you want to do. Dr. Huang and Dr. Xiao also mentioned that students should read more literatures and communicate with supervisors frequently, which helps to avoid detours. Dr Luo pointed out that practical analysis in the real world is much more difficult than the measurements shown in the textbooks. The key to a good FYP project is to read more literatures and figure out what methods and theories are suitable to your research.
During the symposium, other students raised questions about how to read literature, how to find a valuable topic and how to write the literature review, etc. All four professors gave detailed answers.
