Business executives and government officials attend the Accountancy Career Conference during the DBM Weeks

The Division of Business and Management (DBM) held several activities to celebrate UIC’s tenth anniversary between 7 and 15 May.

UIC President Prof Ching-Fai Ng and Dean of DBM Prof Stella Cho launched “the DBM Weeks” at the opening ceremony on 13 May along with Dennis Ho, President of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA) and Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Raphael Ding, Chief Executive and Registrar of the HKICPA.

Following the ceremony, 40 selected final year projects were exhibited, authored by recent graduates from the programmes of Accounting, Finance, Applied Economics, Management of Human Resources, and Culture, Creativity and Management.

DBM students also presented 15 award-winning QP Case Analysis Competition entries from the last six years on posters.

Prof Stella Cho said the exhibition aimed to promote academic excellence and students had an opportunity to interact with a wide audience including executives and practitioners from the business and government arenas.

President Ng Ching-Fai mentioned he was proud of the students’ accomplishments and the faculty’s commitments, adding that their spirit embraced the slogan of UIC’s tenth anniversary: Innovate, Progress, Excel.

Words of encouragement

Eminent guests were invited to deliver speeches during the DBM Weeks. On 7 May, Secretary for Education of Hong Kong Eddie Ng addressed a High Table Dinner about his life experience. The next morning he shared his views on Hong Kong education during a Distinguished Lecture.

Accountancy career

Highlights also featured a three-part conference on a career in accountancy. It included a forum, two workshops and an alumni sharing session.

Giving their insights and experiences at the conference were eight business executives and government officials: Mabel Chan, Founder of Mabel Chan & Co., CPAs and Vice President of the HKICPA; Ivy Cheung, Partner of KPMG and Vice President of the HKICPA; Eric Tong, Audit Partner of Deloitte China and Council Member of the HKICPA; Johnson Kong, CEO of DBO Ltd and Council Member of the HKICPA; Calvin Chan, Head of Internal Audit Department of Agricultural Bank of China Ltd, Hong Kong Branch; Yanqin Jing, Director of Guangdong Forestry Funds Management; Shannon Tan, Audit Partner of Grant Thornton; and Allan Lee, Director of Allan Lee Professional Solutions.

The audience was also inspired by two alumni’s stories. They were Matthew Feng, an Audit Associate for PricewaterhouseCoopers Hong Kong, and Rob Jia, CEO of Zhuhai Perfect Impression Catering Management Co., Ltd.
