UIC student wins provincial third prize at English public speaking contest

Two UIC students participated in the 2021 Provincial Round of the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) Cup English Public Speaking Contest on 6 November at Shaoguan University. Second-year Accounting student Li Xiang (Olive) performed well and won the third prize.

A total of 147 contestants from top-flight universities in Guangdong entered the provincial showdown. The two UIC participants were led by teachers from the English Language Centre, Lecturer Nancy Liu and Professional Writer Phillip Yeung.

Olive thanked ELC teachers that supported her throughout the contest. She considered this an excellent opportunity to learn from ELC teachers. She was deeply impressed with the teachers' rich knowledge of writing, public speaking, organisational skills, etc.

First-year Accounting student Mao Mengdi (Mandy) said she would continue to devote consistent efforts to become a better public speaker, even though she didn't achieve a satisfying result in the contest. Through the preparation, she learned that speaking is nevertheless about techniques but how to form unique and accurate perspectives.

One of the instructors, Phillip Yeung believes that the meaning of the contest lies in the whole experience rather than just the prize and result. Another instructor, Nancy Liu hopes that the contest could be regarded as the beginning of students new chapter of learning.
