DBM students win second prize in mathematical modelling contest

A team composed of three students from the Division of Business and Management  (DBM) at UIC won the second prize at the 2020 Asia and Pacific Mathematical Contest in Modelling (APMCM).

The 2020 Asia and Pacific Mathematical Contest in Modelling attracted many well-known universities at home and abroad. More than 28,000 students from 782 universities signed up for the competition, and 7,205 papers were submitted.

The APMCM competition lasts for four days. The test questions and materials for the competition are in English, and students must also write in English. The participating teams should complete all tasks of establishing models, solving, verifying, and writing English essays for the specified problems within the specified time. Therefore, participating students must have robust mathematical modelling, analysis, and English writing skills.

Finance students, Hu Yuge and Zheng Haoran, along with Entrepreneurship and Innovation student, Yang Haiduo, and their instructor Dr Wu Ming-Lu, all represented UIC at the competition. Zheng Haoran stated how DBM provides some practical courses related to mathematics and statistics, such as applied econometrics, calculus and linear algebra. He explains how the courses have laid a foundation for the competition and allowed them to learn how to adapt their knowledge to real-life. He considers mathematical modelling a good exercise opportunity and hopes that more students will participate in it.
