On the morning of April 8th, Dr. Anthony Liu, director of accounting program, gave lectures themed "Career Personality Test - Business Model Canvas - Career Path for Accounting" to students majoring/minoring in accounting.
At the beginning of the lecture, Dr. Liu introduced the topic with four questions that students were very concerned about: "Shall I find a job or apply for the postgraduate studies after graduation from UIC?" " What job would I like to do if I find a job after graduation?" " What job would I like to do if I find a job after graduation?" " My parents expect me to do xxx, what should I do in the future?"
In the first part of the lecture, Dr. Liu introduced in detail the MBTI Personality Test, a very popular personality categorizing system recently. The test is a theoretical model of personality types developed by American writer Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Briggs. It measures people's preferences according to Myers and Briggs' four personality type dimensions to help people discover their strengths and better understand what makes people different. The test defined 16 personality types on four dimensions: Introversion vs. Extraversion, Sensing vs. Intuition, Thinking vs. Feeling, Judging vs. Perceiving. After a brief introduction of the 16 personality types, Liu also shared the results of his own test, and explained the correlation between his career choice and personality type in detail.
Dr. Liu then introduced a strategic management template for developing new career models and documenting existing career models - "Career Business Model Canvas ". This template consists of nine modules involved in the business model, showing all modules on a canvas, allowing people to draw or design more flexibly. Dr. Anthony Liu explained in detail how to use this template for strategic thinking, analysis and selection with the example of as the PD of accounting department and as an industry manager/consultant.
Then, Dr. Liu discussed the career path of accounting, and discussed how to plan the career development of accounting and the career direction of accounting graduates from the analysis of the innovative role of accounting students.
Finally, Dr. Liu concluded that for the four questions mentioned at the beginning of the lecture, students can first learn about their personality through MBTI personality test and other occupational tests to find out the most suitable job. Next, analyze and compare careers that match their personality, and use the business model canvas to think strategically about which options are best for their personal growth and career goals. Based on the above two steps, make short - and long-term plans for the career path and growth. Revisit these steps two years or as needed.
