On 24 April 2025, Prof. Adolf K.Y. Ng delivered a speech titled "The Impacts of Trump's Administration on Global Shipping and Ports" at the 18th Port Officers' Union (POU) Professional Development Seminar held in Singapore.
The seminar was organized by POU, in collaboration with PSA Singapore Human Resource and the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), specifically for POU's PMEs (Professionals, Managers, and Executives) members. The theme of the seminar was "International Trade Policies & The Global Container Trade – What's Next after Trump 2.0 Tariffs?".
The seminar highlighted that a series of policies enacted amid US-China geopolitical tensions prompted many companies and countries to either adopt a wait-and-see approach or expedite shipments before tariff deadlines. These developments disrupted global goods flows and stalled investments, potentially leading to a contraction in container trade. According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), long-term economic decoupling between the US and China could reduce global GDP by 7%. Geopolitical tensions have also heightened uncertainties in the port sector, signaling the start of an era marked by trade uncertainty and retreat from globalization.
