ICEB Workshop: Past, current, and future of Structural equation modeling (CB-SEM and PLS-SEM)

Hosted by Mac Shiau (Wen-Lung Shiau), Chang Gung University

Location: Zhuhai, China (BNU-HKBU UIC)

Date: 26 October 2024

Structural equation modeling (SEM) has received considerable attention (Gefen et al. 2000 & 2011; Shiau and Chau 2016; Hayes et al. 2017; Mertens and Recker 2020; Hair et al. 2022;Shiau 2023), for example, the management information systems (Ringle et al. 2012 & 2022), marketing (Hair et al. 2012b) and strategic management (Hair et al. 2012a), operations management (Peng and Lai 2012), and organizational research (Sosik et al. 2009). However, despite the increasing use of SEM, the methodology is often poorly executed because researchers ignore the evolution of SEM and key issues in mediation(eg. Shiau et al. 2021), moderation(eg. Liang and Shiau 2018; Shiau et al. 2021), and control variables (Shiau et al. 2024). This implies that there is a necessity to educate PhD students and junior researchers when and how to use SEM correctly for research and journal publications (eg. Shiau and Chau 2016; Liang and Shiau 2018; Shiau et al. 2021 & 24; Shiau 2023).

In this workshop, we discuss the past, current, and future of SEM as follows:

Past: the key issues in the evolution of SEM.

Current: Common errors in mediation, moderation, and control variables.

General guidelines for mediation, moderation, and control variables.

New guidelines for SEM.

Future: Mixed, multiple methods, and AI with SEM.

More advanced topics will not be covered in depth but will be suggested with suitable literature. At the end of the workshop, it is expected that participants will be able to accurately use SEM (CB-SEM and PLS-SEM) applications, and some extensions as required for research and journal publications.

Potential audiences of the workshop Individuals wish to learn when and how to use SEM (CB-SEM and PLS-SEM) for their PhD research and/or high quality journal publications.

Instructor Wen-Lung Shiau received his MS in Computer Science from Polytechnic University, New York, US, in 1995 and the PhD degree from the National Central University, Chung-Li, Taiwan, in 2006. He is a professor in the Department of Information Management, Chang Gung University. He has published 86 journal papers and many highly cited articles in the Web of Science and Top 1% by citations/field in Clarivate Analytics (ESI). His current research interests include data analysis, marketing, and E-business. His papers have been published or accepted in Internet Research, IM&DS, Scientometrics, IT&P, IJIM, DSS, I&M, EJIS, among others. He is also on the 2019-2022 Stanford University’s list of the top 2% most-cited scientists in the world.

Important notices

  • Prof. Ringle  will support 100 participants with a 2-month free license of SmartPLS 4.X (Ringle et al. 2022). Thanks for the support from Prof. Ringle, C.M.
