DBM held a Distinguished Lecture on May 19, 2021. Dr. Deming Lin, Associate Professor from Dalian University of Technology, delivered an online lecture titled as “From Literature to Knowledge - The Theory and Application of the Mapping Knowledge Domain” to UIC students and staff in T2-306. Dr. Lin’s research interests include intellectual property management and science and technology policy, scientometrics and science and technology management.
Dr. Lin started the lecture by introducing the concepts of literature and scientific knowledge. He systematically discussed “scientific knowledge” and the emergence of scientific knowledge, the “Gestalt” phenomenon of scientific research, Karl Popper’s "World 3" and Kuhn’s theories about the structure of scientific revolutions.
During his presentation on the definition, developmental history, and common analysis methods of “mapping knowledge domain”, Dr. Lin pointed out that scientometrics is an interdisciplinary subject which uses statistics and computer technology to make quantitative analysis of science and technology. Mapping knowledge domain is one of the recent advances of scientometrics.
To illustrate the applications of scientometrics and mapping knowledge domain in different scenarios, Dr. Lin introduced three cases originating from bibliometrics, patent-metrics, and policy-metrics: a) The bibliometrics of scientific literature supported by entropy could be employed to analyze the evolutionary feature of a particular scientific field; b) The patent-metrics could be used to estimate the technology life circle. c) The policy-metrics could be employed to identify the options of policy tools for the strategy of China intellectual property.
